Quality of image on monitor playing PS3 games?

Hey,

I have a 24" samsung 245bw. From my knowledge and understanding, it is just a standard lcd with nothing special like hdmi output etc.

I am getting the PS3 and want to hook it up to my monitor. I will need a HDMI to DVI converter in order to plug it in to the monitor.

Now my question is, how would the quality look on my monitor? I won't get 1080p quality on my monitor would i? I don't know much about hooking up consoles to pc monitors.

Has any one played games on their pc monitor before? How is it compared to a 1080p LCD?

Thanks!

David

According to the specs on Newegg your monitor has a resolution of 1920x1200. That is slightly higher than 1080p resolution (1920x1080).

The question is whether or not the monitor will accept a 1080p signal from the PS3. It very well may but I don't know. I did a quick Google search and it returned promising results with people discussing using HD-DVD players outputing 1080p and working well so you may be in luck.

If it does work then the image quality should be excellent and will be full 1080p quality. Keep in mind that the monitor has an aspect ratio of 16:10 while the output from the PS3 is the HDTV standard 16:9. There will be small black bars on the top and bottom of the screen if the monitor doesn't stretch it (preferred).

I recommend Monoprice.com for an HDMI > DVI adapter. They also have adapter cables.

EDIT: I did find THIS thread and it looks like the monitor will unfortunately stretch 16:9 content to 16:10. Images from the PS3 will be slightly stretched vertically.

Thanks for your input Hi Ho.

Thanks especially for the link to the adapter. I was about to buy it for $50 at my local best buy.

Does anyone know if there is a hack or something you could do to force the monitor from 16x10 to 16x9?

I've tried searching but no luck. Thanks.

Friend of mine has a similar setup, with a 24" Samsung LCD and a PS3. The games do fill the entire screen, but I can assure you the picture does not look stretched. There is only 60 measly extra pixels on top and on bottom that are filled in, so the picture will still look excellent.

Hey guys,

So i just purchased my PS3 today.

I was about to purchased the hdmi > dvi converter and then I realized that I needed a usb > audio converter as well. What do you guys think of:

http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2

Is there another one on the site that you could recommend? I couldn't see any on there.

Damn Sony! If only they have audio outputs so i can hook up my speakers!!!

Thanks in advance!

I haven't used those types of adapters, but I did want to make a suggestion. You can use your PS3's "AV Multi-Out" for sound and HDMI for video at the same time. The newest 3.x firmware allowed this. You can go into the settings tab and set them up to work from separate sources. I use this setup to attach my PC monitor via HDMI for video and then bought this adapter: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00..._ya_oh_product for my speakers.

Hey Alaron,

I didn't know that, so thanks for the heads up!

However, that got me thinking that it would be useful for an adapter that had a mic output as well. Would this one work?
