Need cheap video card advice
Hi;
I'm trying to put together a light gaming rig for a friend out of some parts I have, which are: Asrock P4VM890: http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.as...=P4VM890&s=478 **This is an old S478 board with a PCIex16 socket Pentium 4 Prescott 3.0Ghz 1 GB DDR 333 RAM Will run XP Pro The power supply is an Antec SmartPower SL400 +5V Max 38A +12V Max 23A I'm hunting for a cheapish video card to get it able to play moderate games. I did find this on Ebay, which I thought was a decent deal for a decent card...http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tab%3DWatching So my questions are: 1) Is this card sufficient for non DX10 games? 2) Any other suggestions for something in that price range that might perform better? 3) It appears that this power supply should be able to handle this card, am I correct? Thanks!

For 2 dollars more you can get a card that is two generations newer, and get it from a reputable source: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130394
I'd wait for someone more knowledgeable to speak to the powersupply question; it is definitely a concern.

Thanks Lefty--
Another question for you--If I'm using XP, I won't be able to run DX10 games even if the card supports DX10...is that correct? |

You won't get DX10 effects. You can still play games like Crysis in DX9 mode, but you won't get some of the fancy particle/smoke effects, etc.

According to the spec list for the 8600, it needs 22A on the 12V rail and your Antec PSU has 23. So it's cutting it a bit fine, but it should work.

PCI express 2.0 question
Hi;
I'm wondering if a video card that says it is PCI express 2.0 compliant will work in a board that has a PCI express x 16 slot. I've been told that the 2.0 stuff is backwards compatible... Thanks |
