weird screen freezing/distortion
I have been running windows 7 for a while.. and i am having this issue where my screen "freezes"
It kinda gets all blurry in diagonal lines... it happens allot when i launch a game or sometimes just random. If i wait a little bit it fixes itself.. I tried to take a screen shot if it.. but i looked at the screen shot and it just displayed what i should have been seeing.. not the weird distorted lines. What is my problem.. I already upgraded my video card firmware.. which is a 7900gtx btw

Make sure your resolution and refresh rate are set to something the monitor can handle.

Okay... well i checked Resolution and refresh rate.. both set to what the monitor recommends.
I have noticed something.. it just happened when i hit the "reply" button to write this post... after waiting ten seconds it went away... but in a game it happens.. and it never fixes itself. |

Hardware substitution may be the best method of troubleshooting this issue. I'd try another monitor first and see if you get the same distortion. Keep in mind, the refresh rate on lcd monitors is 60Hz. Raising it above 60Hz makes no improvement. If the problem persists with a 60Hz setting and a different monitor, my next guess would be that Rosewill power supply. They aren't the highest rated units and could have a voltage problem feeding the video card.

I am using the newest Nvidia drivers for windows 7.. as of the ones i downloaded 2 days ago.
I tried a new monitor.. same stuff... except this monitor says "Input not supported" when the screen goes all fuzzy.. Whats weird is the first time i tried the new monitor.. it worked.. Last edited by J_ZeFF; 08-19-2009 at 12:39 AM. |

i tried doing this... something i found after some research.
"follow these steps. Turn off the PC,but do not unplug it,open the system unit.Set the multimeter to read DC volts in the next range higher than 12 volts.Locate a power connector similair to the hard drive,or floppy drive connector that is unused and turn on the PC.You can also unplug a drive connector and use it as well.Turn on the PC and insert the BLACK probe into the power connector on one of the BLACK wires.Touch the RED probe to the YELLOW wire onthe power connector. The multimeter reading should be +12 volts. Now touch the RED probe to the RED wire and the reading should be +5 volts. If no readings or different readings occured, you,ll have to replace the power supply." The power supply tested out fine.. The monitor was not the issue.. what now? Last edited by J_ZeFF; 08-20-2009 at 03:38 PM. |

I wouldn't rule out the PSU based on that test. Your problem is erratic and the PSU voltages may be going out of spec erratically in response to different load conditions. However, things do seem to be pointing to a faulty graphics card.
How frequently do you get this problem? I assume winxp is no longer installed but if it is, run it for a while and see if the problem arises to eliminate a win7 driver/software problem. WinXP and Vista/Win7 have a different driver API. If your the adventurous sort, you could try running a linux livecd for a while and see if the problem arises under linux. If it does, you can be certain of a hardware problem. |

No. However, your ram could possibly be defective. You can test it:
www.memtest.org However, I think it's more likely a problem with the video card. |

It gets stranger...
I was cleaning up my case to put the side back on it... I realized i didn't plug in the 6pin "PCI express graphics connector." Keep in mind, it was not plugged in, but running games pretty good, and not crashing at all. I turned off my computer, plugged in the 6pin plug... turned it back on, SAME PROBLEM AS THE ORIGINAL POST!! (see above picture) Does this mean my PSU is in fact bad? |

It's either the PSU or the video card. Some Rosewills are decent, some are junk.

Without swapping out hardware, how can i determine if its the GPU or the PSU..
My other computer has an integrated GPU, and i really have no where else to get one to swap for testing.. I feel like im going in circles, im sorry guys... But thanks for helping. Here is my PSU btw.. http://www.rosewill.com/products/390/productDetail.htm Im assuming im not just having compatibility issues with windows 7? All drivers are up to date, and Windows is as well EDIT: i was messin around... had the GPU 6 prong plugged in.. it froze on me. as it was frozen i unplugged it. Instantly went away... I do notice slower frame rate in graphic heavy games or i would just leave it unplugged... Last edited by J_ZeFF; 12-14-2009 at 02:29 AM. |

I did some more exploration...
M PSU is an Sli one, so it comes with two 6 pin pci-e plugs... Neither of them work. My older 6800gt came with a cord that turns two regular 4 pin plugs into a 6pin plug, i tried that and it also did not work.. Also,i can ALT+TABto desktop fine, and it unfreezes, I can Ctrl+Alt+Del fine Only game/picture loading is effected, nothing else... Would this make you think its the power supply, or the GPU? I finally found some1 who can swap hardware with me for troubleshooting, so i will see how that goes. EDIT: Went to my uncles, he has the EXACT same video card. 7900 gt ko. I swapped mine out and put his in, worked flawlessly. Now i just gotta pick anew GPU. Last edited by J_ZeFF; 12-15-2009 at 01:14 AM. |
