DVD Recorder

I don't know if this is an appropriate question as it doesn't pertain to computers. I purchased a Toshiba DVD recorder and connected it to my tv with a HDMI cable. All I get is coasters. I tried DVD +,DVD-,DVD rw, none works. My setup is, TV cable comes into my VCR, and out to the tv. The only connection to the DVD recorder is the HDMI cable. What am I missing? The instructions are poor. I also tried component cables and S video cable,to no avail. What can I try next?

Where is the other end of the cable? The TV?

I would hazard a guess that you need to hook up the DVD Recorder to the cable source, not just the TV.

What is the model TV and model DVD Recorder?

I found out that the DVD recorder I purchased didn't have a digital tuner so I upgraded to one with a tuner. If they would have told me that when I bought it,it would have saved my a lot of headaches. Tomorrow I will hook it up. Thanks for your help/
