Thumbs down The Ripple Effect...

...is not exactly my cup of tea...

My display keeps giving me wave-like ripples, vertical or horizontal, depending on how I scroll. I upgraded from W2K (when it didn't happen!) to Win XP Pro--is this some kind of residual scrap?

I'm running under Win XP Pro, SP II; AMD Athlon 2800 1.25 Ghz processor; 2 GB of RAM. Display is an Nvidia GeForce 7300 GT video card.

How do I get rid of this unwanted effect?

Try updating your video drivers directly from the Nvidia site.

Question

I downloaded the recommended Nvidia driver (Dualview, a Win XP display driver), but after I tried to install it, I got this error message:

"The Nvidia Setup program could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware...."

I have an Nvidia GeForce 7300 GT installed, and I get that kind of error message?

What gives?

Are you sure you got the correct driver? Here is the correct Nvidia driver for your video card under XP:

Thanks - I made the dumb mistake of using the Driver Robot--an invasive, suspect program from most of the CNET reviews--to pick the needed display driver. Nvidia has this program on their driver website.

I just hope that Driver Robot hasn't scanned my system for some clown in Sloboovia...I don't know why Nvidia paired up with the producer of that nasty bot--they made a deal with the Devil!

Maybe Nvidia is just interested in making a fast buck, and to hell with concerns about invasive partners. Think I'll be letting them know about the scathing reviews of Driver Robot....

Hi Ho, I downloaded the Nvidia driver from the link you posted, but it wouldn't install, and gave me the same error message I got with the Nvidia Dualview driver....

That error message makes no sense. If it is indeed a 7300 GT card the driver should be included in that driver package. What brand is your card and when did you buy it? Are you running XP Pro 64bit by chance?

Try opening the device manger and deleting the video card. Restart and do not let Windows try to install its generic driver. Run the Nvidia setup and see what happens.

See attachments. The 7300 GT is clearly listed under the supported hardware for that driver package.

The card brand is eVGA...I bought the card last year.

I don't think I'm running 64-bit; I do know that it's "version 2002."

Strangely, the video card doesn't show up in the Device Manager....

Sounds like you didn't install the motherboard chipset drivers.

I thought I re-installed the A7V880 mobo chipset drivers (VIA KT880) right after I upgraded from W2K to Win XP Pro in the early spring, but I'll re-install them again...

I trust these Asus web site A7V880 drivers are the right updates to my chipset drivers (on CDROM, that came with the motherboard), but I don't know exactly which files to download--any suggestions (the URL link to that site doesn't hold)?

23 files found:

BIOS (9) [BIOS History]

BIOS-Utilities (2)

AUDIO (1)

LAN (1)

RAID (1)

Utilities (1)

Others (1)

Manual (7)

The "VIA 4 in 1 Driver Package" under "Other" should be what you need.

Thumbs up

I reinstalled my mobo chipset drivers, then re-installed the eVGA display drivers that came with my Nvidia GeForce 7300GT...

This time around, those display drivers installed so that they showed up in the Device Manager.

Then I successfully reinstalled the latest Nvidia display drivers for Win XP.

The cussed Ripple Effect has vanished!

So, many Thanks to Panama Red, Hi Ho, and glc for steering me in the right direction!
