Need help making a DVD from an avi file

I need some help. Here's what I'm trying to do: I'm attempting to take an avi file that has a display aspect ratio of 2.444 and write it to a dvd and play in that aspect ratio. So the program needs to fill the difference with black on top and bottom so it will fit on a tv screen.

The problem I'm having is that everytime I convert/write this file I end up with a stretched picture. I've tried using sony dvd architect, nero, ulead video studio 9 and a few other programs.

Can anyone recommend a program or method to fix this? I can burn the dvd fine and make it playable I just need some help sorting out the problem with the aspect ratio. Thanks in advance

AutoGK will do it and it is free.... known as Auto Gordian Knot

I have also used the Windows WVM and have had good success and I have used ConvertXtoDVD but that is a pay app...as well as WinAVI
