Replacing 6600GT

I've finally gave up on this card. First, it was the FPS drops, now its just making a ton of racket. If you have ever stuck a piece of paper in a fan and just listen to it hit the paper, thats the type noise its making.

Previously in another thread I posted about 3-4 weeks back, a guy reccomended a "Radeon HD 4650".

The price on that is great, only setback is my monitor is VGA. Would I be better off finding a VGA card or just getting a VGA-DVI adapter?

FWIW, the current 6600GT is PCI-Express x16.

If anyone has any recommendations, feel free to shoot them my way, I am looking for a decent card that isnt too high. I only play Counter Strike, Left 4 Dead, and use it for video encoding. I guess the encoding is the most strenuous part. So take that in mind too I reckon.

The card should come with at least one DVI to VGA adapter if it doesn't have a native VGA port.

I second GLC on the DVI to VGA adapter, all video cards that only have DVI connectors will have at least one DVI to VGA adapter included. The HD4650 has hardware support for video encoding via ATI's Avivo Video Converter (which is free) and runs much faster than if you were encoding video on the processor. Here is a link: http://ati.amd.com/technology/avivo/technology.html

So the HD4650 is a popular choice? That is a great price on it. But doesnt video conversion take place on the processor, not the video card?

Under most circumstances video conversion does take place on the processor, however the HD4650 is capable of converting video faster than most processors with the program I linked to above. The mid-range and high-end video cards within the last year or so have the capability to convert video and provide computation outside of just gaming.

What do you think of the next step up? ( I assume it'd be a step up)

You are not going to notice much improvement from the increase of ram to 1GB, however the faster type of ram coupled with the improved clock speed will make the performance go up quite a bit in both gaming and computation. Either the HD4650 or the HD4670 will be a huge improvement over your current card.

Ok, thanks for the info. The price difference isnt that much and I noticed the 4670 has a slightly better cooling design to it. I may have to remove my PCI exhaust fan, but that was only there to sit right below the video card to help cool it anyway.

Well, installed the card, and installed teh drivers from ATI website. In condition zero (counter strike), the card keeps dropping down to 70fps and tends to momentarily "freeze" the mouse during gameplay. The 6600gt NEVER paused the mouse, though the framedrops did occur, albeit not nearly as bad.

I've also noticed the monitor doesnt make the "click" noise that it does when it normally loads games.

Did you completely uninstall the old Nvidia drivers? Try different driver versions, starting with those that came with the card.

What resolution and refresh rate are you using? What were you using with the old card?

I uninstalled teh nvidia display drivers, yes. But keep in mind I have to leave the NForce chipset drivers on. I first used the drivers from the website, now I am trying the ones from the cd that came with the card. IN a server with just me and 3 bots, the gameplay is fine. Then I went on a deathmatch server (high intensity) and it dropped, and froze like before.

I am using the card on 800X600 , 100hz refresh rate, which I have ALWAYS used.

This is 3 times worse than the old card. At least the old card was only minor problems, this is flat ridiculous what is going on now.

After installing drivers from the cd and that not helping, I went back to the website and updated drivers from there. Still doesnt help.

Do you have the latest patch for counter strike installed? Also have you tried any other games to see if the problem is limited to just counter strike? Try changing the refresh rate to something like 60Hz or 75Hz, I know some people have problems at 60Hz, so 75Hz will be better in that case; however I don't see any reason for 100Hz; it doesn't help too much since you don't have flicker with 75Hz, and you won't be able to see that many frames per second. If you are having troubles with all the games and with a lower refresh rate like 60Hz or 75Hz, then you may need to RMA the card. The HD4670 should easily be able to handle Counterstrike at max settings (no AA/AF) with at least 100fps.

Just got back from an out-of-town basketball game. Will test a new refresh rate, though I honestly dont believe that will have any effect. I've used 800X600, at 100HZ for years with this game. Goign to try Left for Dead.

Ok. L4d just maxed out at 60fps, but that felt smooth. It did drop from 60 to 25 time to time. I have also tried moving from OpenGL to Direct3d, which made cs:CZ tons WORSE.

Have tried everything I can think of...

Oh well - it happens. If you can, RMA it and get a 9600GSO.

I can tell thats not going to fit. The clearance from the end of the gold connectors on the card vs the back of my hard disk IDE cable (chunky) and the chipset fan being right beside it wont allow this one to happen. Size-wise, I think I need something not so "wide."

What happened when you changed the refresh rate? Have you ever had vsync enabled and/or triple buffering; I find it helps in some games. I haven't read of anyone else having a problem with counterstrike condition zero and the HD4670; you should try running a benchmark like 3DMark06 to see if your card is running at is should be or it is faulty. Is the video encoding on the HD4670 running properly?

The refresh rate didnt help the FPS issue. I have no idea how to check the vsync on this card, as I have enabled normal mode, and advanced mode frmo within the Control Catalyst and there is no vsync option. THe only thing remotely close is "wait for vertical refresh" which is turned to always off. Triple buffering IS enabled from up under the OPENGL settings.

I am going to test the vertical refresh option, set to always on, and see what happens.

No luck, for a minute there I thought it was working well. Just imagine being in a first person shooter, and trying to strafe, but move your aim the opposite way. So your strafing right, trying to adjust aim to the left. Now imagine the mouse pointer just DOESNT move. Thats what I am running into.

Trying to find a downlaod location for 3dmark06.

Furthermore, how do I check the encoding on the card?

The basic 1.1 version will not load. It displays the splash screen saying scanning your system configuration and never gets past that. It was on that screen for well over 12 hours now, as I left it there and went out to a football game party last night. Got back and its still on the splash screen.

Tried downloading the June09 update, and the installer hangs because it cant find vcredist.msi

Let me ask this question, as I havn't read anything about it in this thread as of yet. How exactly did you removed your old NVidia drivers ? Did you use a program such as Driver Cleaner Pro or some other similar program (you can always reinstall your nforce drivers if you accidentally clear them)? I know that just doing the uninstall from your Add/Remove programs or however you did it, will not clear all the drivers out. Assuming you did it with a program as opposed to Windows utility, it might be a matter of reformatting your harddrive if it isn't the card itself (This would be your last attempt to fix the issue).

I havn't played CS is quite sometime, but I think vsync is in the CS video control panel if I am not mistaken. I may be wrong, but check that area out.

It is always possible that something else on the rig is having compatibility issues with the Radeon card. Could you maybe go ahead and post your computer specs, maybe there is something that we are all overlooking.

My suggestion is to go back, download Driver Cleaner Pro, clean Nvidia and Ati. Then reinstall your ATI drivers.

I have supplied a link to a download for it.

DFI motherboards are famous for being very picky. See if there is a bios update available.

What is the brand and model of your power supply?

I apologize for the incorrect system log. Just thought it would be best to show what the full setup looked like.

I am using an Enermax EG485-AX power supply.
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...t,1073-14.html

I have installed the driver cleaner as suggested above. And I 3dmark06 has finally decided its going to run. So I will do the bechmark, post the results, then proceed with driver removal/replacement if need be.

I managed to find this page when digging up possible BIOS updates. I have never messed with BIOS so will admit I am nervous about messing with it.

That link does not take me directly to a bios update. A bios update is safe if you follow the instructions EXACTLY.
