Here is a link to a pretty detailed review on the HD5870: http://www.guru3d.com/article/radeon...-review-test/1.

Doesn't look like it will provide much more power than the GTX295 (seems like it's almost on par with it) and should provide about a 50% improvement over the HD4870/90. Since it sells for around $400 at the moment, it costs double or more what a HD4870/90 costs.

Deffinately get's me excited to see future 5890 and stuff like that. I'm still so pumped to see the DX11 and GTX300 series though. But the only thing i find a bit dissapointing is the memory interface.
But it's still just the first of many cards to be released this fall lol

Maybe its just me, but I think the performance is really poor on the 5870. Sure, its all top of the line right now...but its our next generation and its just barely above Nvidias last top of the line. Unless Nvidia releases a card with the same performance as its 295 then Ati has already lost the performance battle pretty much.

Don't think I'm a Nvidia fanboy or anything...I'm really more of an Ati guy, and I'll probably get this card...I just can't see how everyone is all amazed by the performance.

The only card you can really compare the HD5870 to is the GTX285 since both are single GPU cards, the GTX295 is dual GPU. Next month ATI is suppose to release the HD5870X2 which will have two HD5870 GPUs on the card. When you compare the GTX285 to the HD5870, you'll see why everyone is all amazed by the performance.

My bad, I think the review I read was just misleading. If you look here the results are really poor...even in crossfire it doesn't beat the 295.

From the review you linked to it looks like the HD5870 beats an overclocked GTX295 (which costs a good amount more than the HD5870) in about half of the tests (not including the high AA/AF tests) and crossfire HD5870 beats the overclocked GTX295 in every high AA/AF tests, and that's with the original driver. Crossfire performance usually increases drastically with every driver revision, which is probably why AMD is holding off on the HD5870X2, so that the performance when it will be released will be better.

When the price of the HD5870 drops a decent bit it will be a very worthwhile card, right now though it's a good single GPU card that costs quite a bit, but provides good competition to the GTX285 which costs about the same.

I installed my Asus 5870 today, it is visibly obvious how much better it is than my 4870x2. Worth every dollar for sure.
I played Supreme Commander on it tonight and it is as smooth as silk, my 4870X2 did really great but sometimes when the flying units would engange in massive clusters you can see slight lag. This thing here is just not lagging at all, period!!!

Comparing the single-GPU 5870 to the dual-GPU 295 is just silly. These DX11 cards are going to be a pretty solid upgrade over the DX10 cards.

Nvidia still won't lower their prices on their current GTX200 cards, the prices on them are the same as they were 2 months ago. Nvidia is suicidal I think.

They are totally depending on their hardcore fanboys that wouldn't use an ATI card if they were the last cards on Earth. I'm not a big fan of ATI myself due to driver and software issues, but I'll use them.

5850 will be at retailers around Friday, fyi.

When you take the Cypress based Radeon HD 5870 and cut out 2 SIMDs and 15% of the clock speed to make a Radeon HD 5850, on paper you have a card 23% slower. In practice, that difference is only between 10% and 15% depending on the resolution. What’s not a theory is AMD’s pricing: they may have cut off 15% of the performance to make the 5850, but they have also cut the price by well more than 15%; 31% to be precise.

The result of this is clear: the 5870 is the fastest single-GPU card, and the 5850 is the value alternative. Couple that with the fact that it’s cooler running, quieter, shorter, and less power hungry, and you have a very interesting card. Design-wise the 5850 lets AMD get Cypress in to slightly smaller cases that can’t fit full 10.5” cards, something NVIDIA was never able to capitalize on with the reference GTX design (we actually had several comments on this; apparently a good number of people can’t fit 10.5” cards). The 5870/5850 situation ends up closely mirroring the 4870/4850 situation as a result; the 5870 is still the card to get when price (and size) is no object, but the 5850 is there to fill the gap if you won’t miss some of the performance.

One thing that’s very clear in these benchmarks is that as things currently stand, the 5850 has made the GTX 285 irrelevant (again). The 5850 is anywhere between 9% and 16% faster depending on the resolution, cheaper by at least $35 as of Tuesday morning (with everything besides a single BFG model going for +$70 or more), and features DirectX11. The 5850 is a card that manages to – if at times barely – outclass the GTX285 in performance. If you’ve been waiting for a price shakeup, this is what you’ve been waiting for.
