Geforce 8400, ubuntu and 1080p

I only have a VGA out on a older Dell 3100 computer Im using as a media center. Im running ubuntu at the moment. Now I'm looking at getting this card Geforce 8400. My 42" TV does 1080p but doesnt have a PC input just HDMI. I have a DVI to HDMI cable. This card says it doesnt support 1080p but supports higher resolutions. The questing is, What kind of resolution am I going to get using this card with a DVI to HDMI cable hooked up to my TV? Any help thanks!

Before you think of putting a video card in that machine, make sure the power supply can handle it. I would highly recommend one of the low power ATI cards that has native HDMI support. Nvidia and HDMI has never worked right.

Ive read about this card and it works great with the 3100. There is a another card that has HDMI support for only PCIE 1x but its the difference between $24 and $124. That card although i might have to worry about power consumption. Again I'm looking for an answer on what kind of resolution I would get? Thanks

You have an issue there - you only have legacy PCI slots and a PCI-Ex1 slot - and a 250 watt PSU.

Don't expect the HDMI to pass audio out of a Nvidia card - it ain't happening. I also can't find any legacy PCI cards with native HDMI support.

I know audio wont pass though. Ill just run the audio out to my receiver. I currently have a VGA to componet conveter but looks really bad and doesnt support anything above 1024x768. That 8400 I linked is PCI-Ex1. I'll figure something out. Thanks
