Connecting laptop to an external TV

Greetings,

I have a toshiba satellite laptop with s video output connecting to a tv into its composite video input via a s-video-to-composite-video adapter. I set the laptop resolution display to its lowest, set the graphic card so that it is in a tv as monitor mode, and enabled laptop output into tv by pressing fn-f5 hotkey (for toshiba).

But instead got a picture, I got a distorted one. I know my tv reads the video input since the distorted picture is somewhat representing my desktop view. Moreover, the graphic card shows that it discovered my tv as its external monitor.

I have an old Phillips tv and an old p4 toshiba satellite a34 series laptop with intel extreme graphic card.

Anybody can point me out if I miss some steps that causing the distortion?
Regards,

Ethereal
