Working mic turns out crappy quality audio
Bought a nice new sennheiser mic which works beautifully on my laptop, but when I use it on my desktop the sound quality comes out really low.
I'm not using a sound card, only my asus p5b motherboard's onboard sound. Is my audio shot or could this be a driver issue? Something else? |

First, make sure your motherboard has the latest drivers from the Asus website.
Go to Control Panel/Sound/Recording/Microphone/Custom. Try your setting with the microphone boost both in the on and off setting. Does it make a difference? If the boost was on you may be over modulating, if off you may not have been loud enough. Experiment with some of the other settings in the Microphone Properties panel. I had to experiment in order to get my microphone settings correct. I also went to the microphone settings in the various games I play and the microphone settings for my sound card, but changing those were not as effective as the Windows sound controls. The only other idea I have is to buy a sound card.

No, the audio comes through, but there's all types of static and backround noise and it just plain sounds like crap.
Not sure what driver to use...I have an asus p5b p965, but I don't know exactly what that corresponds to in asus' list of drivers here: http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx Been messing with the audio settings but nothing's working. Mic boost just amplifies the sound, static included, and other settings either make it sound worse, or turn my mic off completely. |

Thanks guys!
On a related note, do you guys have any suggestions for software that automatically manage and/or update drivers? Or would you even suggest using something like that? I mean I don't mind dropping $30 on something like that if it means not having to worry about it myself... edit: installing that driver, via: http://www.msfn.org/board/soundmax-a...s-t109404.html did not help. Sound's still quiet and static-riddled. I actually just noticed a rip in my mic's cord, and decided I'd test it on my netbook, but the sound came out perfectly so it has to be on my desktop's end. There are a few driver update pay for services that you can Google that will give scan your system for free and tell you which drivers are old. (There is one that wants you to download their software first...forget that BS.) You can then go to those websites directly and download the drivers yourself for free. I found it is best to download drivers directly from the manufacturers website...too often second party websites try to sneak crapware onto your computer or require you to create an account with them....then you start getting their spam. Always try to get your drivers directly from the original source.

Any other suggestions?
I finally got my new laptop keyboard in the mail so I can use my mic on that machine, but I still want to get this fixed. |
