this issue been bugging me for months. there is no freaking way to search for audio drivers, unless you open the computer and look at the motherboard codec chip. this is easy for desktops. but its impossible for laptops. the problem is that the audio codec is hidden behind the controller and the "unknown devide" would have the device id for the controller, not the codec.
i can do the lspci command in linux, but still can't see the codec chip. is there a practical way that i can find out the codec chip's maker/model. if neccesary i can use a linux live cd as the live would have the drivers and recognize the codec.

If you search the manufacturer's site, does it show you the original build list? I often use that info to determine what parts originally came in a laptop.

Then it's probably a different ADI chip - sorry, but I can't find out which one, all I can find is that it's an ADI.

What operating system do you need the drivers for? I had a similar problem when I was trying to downgrade to XP on my HP laptop that didn't have XP drivers. I googled XP downgrade for my specific laptop model and found a forum with links to all the different drivers (including audio).

it was made for xp. i think i know the solution. boot to linux (kde), then go the sound section. the codec model is there. the problem is the cd drive is broken and you can't boot from usb or flash drive. i can put another hdd and install linux but i'll just wait for the cd-rom to arrive.
question: is getting around the codec invisibility a technical impossibility? or i can somehow "see" the codec without having the drivers? |
