HD 3870 to HD 5870 or Not

Will it make a noticeable improvement in graphics if I replace my ATI Radeon HD3870 with an ATI Radeon 5870? I play mainly flight sim and casino games. The MS game FSX seemed to be too demanding.

If your games are playing smoothly with all the quality settings turned up, you won't notice a difference.

FSX will probably benefit significantly but the casino games will be no different. I play a variety of games but the most demanding by far is Crysis and when I upgraded from an 8800GTS to a 5870 the difference was night and day.

Microsoft Flight Simulator only runs at 20 FPS at maximum. Are you running FRAPS when in MFS? Are your graphics settings turned all the way up and do you still get 20 FPS? If so, upgrading will make no difference for what you said you are running. For many other games, sure, a better graphics card will make a huge difference.

My settings are not all the way up. My FPS is at 25. If I place scenery and graphic settings to max, I start to get this jerky motion and spikes start to appear in the horizon, and sometimes the screen goes blank or it freezes and I have to reboot. BTW my processor is 2.4 GHz AMD Athlon 64 x 2 Dual Core mounted on an Asustek M2N32-SLI DeLuxe, 3Gig of RAM.

I don't know. I am surprised to hear you are getting 25 FPS. I have only got 20 FPS, regardless of how I have my settings in MFS. Perhaps buy a card faster card and return it if it does little to nothing for improving MFS.

My nephew can play FSX on his Dell with onboard Intel video as long as he keeps things turned down. It came with Vista, and it refused to play (solid lockups) - but downgrading it to XP made it work. That's why I asked. It came with 1gb ram, and upgrading it to 3gb made a big difference too. We would have put a video card in, but my sister made a big boo-boo and ordered it with the little pizza box case which only takes half height cards and has a non-upgradeable 200 watt PSU.
