laptop sound driver?

So I installed a fresh copy of windows xp on my sisters old laptop. But when it came to installing the drivers, I couldn't get the audio to work. I downloaded the driver from the gateway website and it says it's installing on the background but it never does, I also tried the latest ac 97 and still no luck. any help will be appreciated. I'd like to get it running asap because she is leaving the country in a few days.

You'll want to grab the chipset driver, if you haven't already.


If you right click on "my computer", click "properties", go to the "hardware" tab and click "device manager", is there anything that comes up with a yellow question mark beside it?

thanks Force Flow but I got it working yesterday, and I did try what you mentioned but couldn't get that driver to work, and after about 3 hours I finally found one on driverguide that worked
