Question Windows 7

Hi everyone. I have two harddrives installed in my PC. The primary hd has Windows XP on it. The second hd has Windows 7 installed. I would like to buy a video card that is compatible and functions on both operating systems. The video card--Nvidia FX 5200 --works find on Windows XP, but for some reason will not work correctly on Windows 7. I have updated the driver, etc. Hence, I need a new video card. Any help will be appreciated. deanie44

1. 32 or 64 bit Win7?
2. The RC will be expiring in March - you really should buy the final release if you want to keep using it.

Nvidia has drivers for both 32 and 64 bit Win 7 for that card. The Dell power supply cannot handle a card that's much better than what you have.

glc, thank you for answering my post. I have the 32 bit RC1 release of Windows 7. If I do buy Windows 7 will I have to get a new computer? I think Windows XP is by far the most reliable operating system Microsoft made. I do not understand about the power supply. I have also downloaded the updated driver for the Nvidia card and It does not work. Can you supplu me with some advice of what I shoudl do next. deanie

1) no, you do not have to get a new computer to get an operating system. You can purchase the operating system separately. (Now that I think of it...I'm not sure if you can get away with an upgrade version of win7 or have to buy a full version)

2) In order to run faster and more powerful hardware, the hardware often needs more power to run. When Dell builds a system, there isn't a lot of "extra" power provided by the power supply to operate additional or more powerful components--the computer is built for that specific set of hardware in mind, and a matching power supply to meet the power requirements of that collection of hardware.

3) If the driver doesn't work, it may be because of some of the differences between win7 RC1 and the retail version of win7.

Then - don't worry about Windows 7. Just keep running XP with what you have.

Hi

I'm using an ATI Radeon 5870 and it works fine with both and is very fast.
I think any of the 5800 series card would work.

No way will a Dell E310 run a 5800 without a substantial power supply upgrade. It only has a 230 watt power supply. I wouldn't be surprised if it's having some issues with what it has now. The E310 wasn't even designed to run a video card, even though it does have a slot.
