HDMI suddenly stopped working

Hi everyone, it's been a long time since I've been here and looking forward to whatever help you can give me.

I have an Asus laptop (2 years old) with HDMI on it. I had been successfully connecting to my HD TV to watch videos or surf Internet on the big screen. However, one day it just stopped working and I cannot get the two to communicate again. Is there anyway to test my HDMI card on the laptop to see if that is the issue and get it replaced if necessary? The cable is good since I used other cables that the TV uses already for PVR, BlueRay etc.....

Thanks for your help.

When you go into Control Panel and check display settings what do you see?

Hi Pam thanks for responding.

When I check my display it's not detecting the tv, this makes me think my HDMI card in my laptop has stopped working. Is there a way to do a diagnostic on it? Are there drivers for this?

Isn't that one of the models with switchable graphics? If so, you have to switch to the Nvidia graphics to use the HDMI port.

The Nvidia forums are currently down for maintenance so you won't be able to check there till later tonight or tomorrow.
What you're looking for are any software fixes for your notebook's video out (have you already tried a restore point?) HDMI switch off.

My restore points are beyond that timeframe now, this issue started a few months ago and I couldn't find a solution and then I found this place in my bookmarks and thought I'd give it another shot at why it suddenly stopped working, especially since I didn't do any changes or updates from one day to the next.

What do you mean by HDMI switch off?

Sorry for the short hand.
Software updates, usually security updates, play havoc with HDMI sometimes.
The Nvidia forum keeps track of those and, if that's what hit you, they'd know if it affected your gpu.
That would eliminate one possibility right off and also they'd have the fix.
If it isn't then you have a hardware failure.

Are you sure you aren't running on the integrated graphics? See my previous post.

What am I looking for on the Nvidia graphics mode? What I see is Nvidia Hybrid Graphics, is this what you are referring to?

OK.. I clicked on the help link and this is part of the FAQ

Quote:
What is NVIDIA® Hybrid Graphics?
NVIDIA® Hybrid Graphics is a technology for managing multiple graphics processing units (GPUs) to accommodate changes in graphics performance and power savings requirements.

There are two Hybrid Graphics modes:

Save power. Under Save power mode only the integrated graphics hardware renders and displays. All discrete NVIDIA GPUs are powered off for reduced power consumption and cooler, quieter operation. On notebook computers this also maximizes notebook system battery life.

Increase performance. Under this mode all discrete NVIDIA GPUs are powered on for rendering and displaying to deliver increased graphics performance.
I rarely use the laptop on battery only, it's usually plugged in unless I leave the house with it.

Thanks Pam, I'll check the Nvidia forum out, I did look for driver updates but couldn't find anything about HDMI. Do they have drivers?

The Nvidia forums are still down.

1. Go into the bios.

There are 2 options in the bios for video card.

1) Run the laptop only with Intel HD Graphics
2) Run the laptop with Nvidia Optimus

Choose (2).

2. Go to your desktop and right click and choose the "Nvidia Control Panel". Once that opens click the "Manage 3D settings" link. In there you can change the global settings to use the Nvidia card instead of auto selecting one.
