Are there any performance/quality differences between a flat screen CRT and a standard curved screen CRT?

force_flow2002,
After using both types, I find that my eyes are not as strained with the flat screen. Much easier on the eyes. Carl |

Ditto. Less glare and less eye strain for me.

It's a huge difference. After getting used to a flat display monitor, going back to the regular convex ones is, well, annoying. If you have a choice, definitely get a flat display monitor; they aren't much more expensive than a comparable convex monitor.

i always like how when i look at a flat screen after using a curved screen for 3 years, it looks like it actually curves inward.

Flat screens are easier on the eyes and display lines and grids more accurately than curved screens.
There's nothing wrong with a really high quality curved screen but they will have more glare. That and they haven't made any really high quality ones for a few years. |

Flat is very nice, I like it better than a curved one.
But actually I only like the Flatrons, not the Trinitrons with the two damper wires. For a CRT, I wouldn't get anything but a Flatron. RJ

I've got a View Sonic True Flat 17 inch and it's exellent. I paid a little bit of cash for it , but I wanted the better dot pitch. I do a lot of work with photographs. I think the price has dropped quite a bit in the past year though.

If you like flat screens, the KDS XF series is a heck of a deal. They are dirt cheap and look very nice.

I have been using a Viewsonic true flat 19" for about a year and really like it. The picture is clear, colors look good and haven't noticed any eyestrain.

It seems to be pretty linear but it's nowhere near as nice as a Trinitron style tube.

They really do have a nice picture for general use. There's just no contest between a shadow mask monitor and an aperature grill monitor for design work. If you have access to a place that has some high end monitors on display ask them to run some setup utilities and show you the difference. You'll understand why some monitors are better than others. |

High end CRT's - preferably with Trinitron style tubes - Sony and Iiyama come to mind first.

Would a monitor usually say if it has a Trinitron style tube or not in its discription?

Trinitron - Diamondtron - "aperture grill" as opposed to "shadow mask". Note that these have the 2 grill support wires which are visible as fine black horizontal lines on a white page.

If they're high end, then why do they have lines running through them? Isn't that annoying for doing precise graphic work?

Should dot pitch be the main deciding factor in monitor choice? Is that the "quality" point for which one should look?

The two wires are to hold the grill in place because without them, the aperture grill would vibrate and the image would be distorted.

If CRT are dots then what are tft? squares? and i also have this very annoying line across the screen, could there a broken metal mesh?
*EDIT* Put a water droplet on ur crt, theres the colors. ive noticed it before but never took the time to wonder why it was there. |
