I think it is personal preference. I use ait cards and have never had a problem. On one build I did install a GF2MX and it worked ok, just a little picky about drivers.

I bought a GF4 Ti, since it was cheaper than the ATi I was looking at. For my upgarde/next build, I'll probably go ATi.

It really depends on what you're using your computer for...a very rough generalization would be GeForce for a gaming system, ATI for a multi-purpose system.

I prefer Matrox video cards.

Matrix, omg! Those are great if you're into graphics design and such. But for gaming go Geforce all the way, best bang for your buck! Drivers, I believe nvidia still has better drivers but ATI has come a long way with their catalyst drivers so I give them props there and the 9700 pro, can't beat that card right now, probably the best card on the market right now. I'd like to wait for NV34 and see what that will do 1st. Most of the high end cards are overkill for most games now a days anyways!

For a budget go for the 9500 pro or the Geforce4 TI series and you can't go wrong. Paying over $200 for a card is nothing more than showboating to your friends or being able to post and brag to people on such boards as these. 3dmark scores, those are for the vain glory who just want to say, ha i scored more than you, it's a useless benchmark (only purpose is to boost someone's ego, hehe) DirectX 9, paying for something that can't be used yet is stupid, just wait till the end of the year and you can probably get a 9700pro for about $200 or maybe even less if NV34 will ever come out or the new ATI chip that's being rumored!

I own a Radeon 9500 Pro and like it a lot. I hope you guys checked out the article on how to turn your 9500 into a 9700 pro. That was a wicked article even though I myself cannot convert (9500 pros can't be upgraded to 9700 pros).

If you go GeForce, stay away from the MX chips!!! I've got an ATI Radeon 8500 and it rocks. I'm going to upgrade to a 9700 when they come down a little in price. If you go ATI, stay away from the 9000. Go 8500 if you're on a budget, or go 9500 or 9700 if you've got the cash.

so what exactly does it mean to have support for a directx version? i mean, i've been using a piece of crap onboard graphics chip in my hp for 4 years and i'm using either dx 7 or 8. is it possible that a card can completely not support a version or do certain ones just work better with higher versions??

Mine is an old card actually: GF3 Ti200. Supposedly I was getting the Radeon 9700Pro for my B-day, but the dollar parity went up.

i Have a 9700pro and i see it to be outstanding, but what is it that (ati or gf) has that is better for gaming, because thats what i do.

At any time on AoM's tech support forum there are several threads with something like "Radeon 9700 problem" while I have yet to see a "Geforce problem" for anything above a GF2 MX. So even though the best Radeon is faster, it doesn't seem to be as reliable as a Geforce 4 TI.
