Sound Card and CD R/W problem
hi
I recently jumped from Windows Xp to Windows 2000. Before I jumped to 2000, the audio devices used to work properly.. Though my RAM is less(128 MB) there was no problem.. Now the audio being dragged and inturrupted, sounds very unpleasent. ANd I can not play audio Cds now, Though I can listen them from the CD R/W head phones. (Sound card from C-Media Model :CMI8738/C3DX PCI Audio Device) I have an other problem with CD R/W.. (ATAPI CD-RW 40/12/48X [CD-ROM drive]from CENDYNE) this problem existed even before i jumped to 2000. I can not burn the CDs, as it is being hakt in the process of writing. I think i have some kind of problem with the drivers, so i down loaded a new driver and new aspi .. but no improvement. May be these two problem interrelated. Thank you for reading this boring problem. Hope i can listen to music again with some of your help.. Thanks Ultra |

Can you post your system specs.
Have you downloaded and installed the proper sound card driver for Win2000? When the CD burns halt, are you getting any error messages? Is this happening while burning data and music? What burning software are you using? Do you have a lot of background programs running when you're doing the burns? What kind of burning are you doing...hard drive to CD-RW or CD-ROM to CD-RW? Is DMA enabled for the drives? How are the drives arranged in your computer? Cricket

hi Cricket
I installed the proper driver. To confirm this i reinstalled it just now. But the problem does exist with the audio. Coming to CD R/W.. The problem is the same in all the cases of cd writing.. audio, Data and Cd copy. There is no problem till the audio is formatted .. and then it gets ready for the writing.. then after 2 or 3 % of writing, it stalls or stays there. Many times I could not stop or kill the process. The only way i could resolve this was to restart the system. Recently.. after changing the OS.. I am trying to extract the Audio files from CD to the System, but not able to do this. I contacted the Technical adviser, they sent me the new ASPI driver and asked me to install that. Even then.. there is no improvement. Coming to DMA .. Can you explain how i can enable DMA for dricve. I am providing the system Spex here -- Operating System System Model Windows 2000 Professional Service Pack 2 (build 2195) VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8363 Processor a Main Circuit Board b 966 megahertz AMD Duron 32 kilobyte primary memory cache 4096 kilobyte secondary memory cache Board: 8363-686A Bus Clock: 100 megahertz BIOS: Award Software International, Inc. 6.00 PG 09/14/2000 ATAPI CD-RW 40/12/48X [CD-ROM drive](Cendyne) 3.5" format removeable media [Floppy drive] MAXTOR 6L040J2 [Hard drive] (40.03 GB) -- drive 0 128 Megabytes Installed Memory -- Ultra |

Have you tried that CD-RW in another computer to test yet?
To check if DMA is enabled, hit the Windows key (between the Ctrl and Alt keys) and the Pause/Break key...this will bring up the System Properties box. Click on the hardware tab and then Device Manager. In Device Manager, click on IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. Right click on the channel your CD-RW is on and choose Properties. In the box that pops up, click on the Advanced Settings tab. You'll find the DMA options there. Since you have a VIA chipset, did you install the 4-in-1 drivers and the VIA Bus Master Driver? I understand it's best to use the Microsoft Bus Master Drivers that are built into Windows instead. Try toggling DMA between enabled and disabled. Cricket

A Duron running at 966 MHz with a 100 MHz bus clock? 4096 KB secondary cache? What are you using to get these specs - they do not sound right at all.

Durons run at even multiples of 50 MHz. They have 128k of primary and 64k of secondary cache. Either you have faulty hardware or Belarc is very confused.
