video card problems

I recently did my first build, and i can't get my ati radeon 7500 video card to display anything less than 32 bit. At the same time xp is telling me that the resolutuion setting is too low and i should make it higher. I would if i could!!!! Any thoughts on this? Do you think it could be the monitor, being not compatible with the card?

Right click on the desktop. Select Properties. Hit the Settings tab. Under the monitor's pic you should see something like this:

monitor's name in video cards name

Send a message via AIM to wschino
What mohterboard do you have? Could be some compatability problems. I had a mobo with a VIA chipset with the same video card and I could not get them to work until I loaded the older Catalyst drivers.

i have a asus p4b533 mobo, i did install the drivers for the ati card, and i still can only get 16bit and 32 bit res thats whats listed) Windows tells me my settings are low when i boot up. I try to use the tv out feature, and switch the monitor priorities and nothing happens. Do you think the catalyst drivers would cure this?

i may not understand (lots of things i dont understand)but i thought the screen resolution was like 800 by 600-1280 by 1024 etc,and the 16 bit or 32 bit refered to color.is there something i am misssing.i have an ati vc on win xp and color is only offered in 32 bit(highest)and 16 bit(medium).i change the resolution by the settings on display, little slide on the right moving it to 1080 by 1024 etc.

thats correct raftero. in older versions like win98 it even has 265 colors, 16, and 2 next to the 16 and 32 bit color setting.
this is the amount of colors used. the
the 'slider' sets the number of horizontal and vertical lines that are drawn so to speak.

Chas, i would also advise to install the older drivers if the new ones dont work
(worked for me several times, not tried it on xp thought) .
as far as i can tell from your posts, nothing is wrong with your vidcards settings. do you get any graphical errors when playing games or anything or is it just the warning at bootup?

i haven't been able to play any games because they require 800x600 setting, and i can't get it to go pass 640x480. I can't get the vc to switch from the #1 to the #2 monitor position. The tv out function is x'd out and doesn't appear to work. When you mention older drivers what do you mean?

What monitor do you have and is it capable of higher resolution? I have an old Gold Star that doesn't let me set higher res and if I do I end up booting to safe mode to get it back and usable.

suitcase, I have a monitor that is rated to be used safely at 640x480 res. It is capable of higher res, but not for any long periods of time. That is what was told to me from Gateway. Its a 31" destination monitor they put out in 97 with that convergence sytem they offered. I have suspected that the problem lies with the monitor not allowing higher res. I like this size monitor because of the tv tuner card that allows good viewing for the desktop, more importantly the tv, movies, games. When i first booted up my system, i had an old monitor that seemed to work the ati card fine, it seemed all the card features were working.
