Help! Rundll error w/nvida TNT2/HP sys

I hope someone can help me with this, I about ready to pull my hair out!

I’m helping a friend who has been having alot of system hangs, everything points to video card problems, we’ve tried installing new drivers (from HP), rolling back to the old ones, turning off the onboard video, turning down the acceleration, etc. but haven’t had any luck…

Error of the day:
Rundll – An exception has occurred while trying to run “nView.dll,nViewInitalize”
(was pointing mostly to nview.dll error before we rolled back the drivers)

System:
HP Pavillion 310n
Win XP Home (NT)
Celron 1.1 processor
256mg RAM
PNY nVidia TNT2 model 64 – 32mg.

Whew, in a last ditch effort (just before tossing the card) we downloaded nvidia's latest drivers again (V43.45) and the dumb thing now runs like a champ! Go figure

I too went through a stage where updating video drivers give me the nightmares. Before I do any updates or video troubleshooting nowadays, I will boot to safe mode and uninstall all drivers and application related to the display card and restart, letting windows detect the hardware and installing the drivers. I have much less uncertainty now. One thing I know is that latest version drivers (such as nvidia detonators) may not work well with older graphics card when it comes to games.

The best drivers for a M64 are the built-in XP drivers. You will never turn that thing into a decent gaming card anyway - it's just too slow and "old tech". It's very stable with default Microsoft drivers.

Thanks for the help guys! I really didn’t want to go with the new driver(s) but every driver I tried kept giving me the same errors and more headaches.

I total agree, the original driver is the best for the system but for some reason it just didn’t want to work without constant errors, very annoying, so as a last ditch effort I figure what the heck it don’t work right now so might as well take a walk on the wild side and go for it…

I did go dumpster diving (ie; making sure that the registry was clean) at least I know that the only remnants remaining are the restore points I created before each trial and error.
(On a side note my friends did take the sys. back to the store where they bought it twice and it came back worse and they where charged more every time!!!)

Luckily they don’t do much if any gaming, its main purpose in its lowly life is for school work. I’m not sure where things went haywire, as we all well know just about everyone plays dumb and says they didn’t do anything… I’m thinking (hehehe) that they did a MS driver update and the rest is history!
