?? about flat panel monitors

Is it possible to plug in 2 flat panel (lcd) monitors to the same vid card of the computer?? I have a person that wants one in their office and one on the sales counter but would prefer to not have two computer systems networked together.

They would be about 18' apart. Didn't know if there was a "Y" connector available that would allow 2 together or whether or not it was even possible.

They want to have the same thing on both screens.

I believe that Matrox has a video card that would allow two monitors. (Actually I read about one that they have that supports 4 monitors.) That is the only way I know of. There may be other vendors also - but the capability you are looking for would have to be supported by the video card.

You definately could do one CRT and one LCD quite easily, if that's an option. I'm not too sure about 2 LCDs.

What's the budget on this project?

I hesitate to use the term "unlimited" with respect to the budget, but if I can save the expense of a second cpu system the owner would be happy.

This is a 600 unit storage facility that will have an office and a "point of sale" counter. He wants one master system in his office that would have to be running 24/7 to handle the keypad (for PIN entry numbers) of the gate to the site and then a monitor / keyboard on the "point of sale" counterfor entering the rental information and taking a video picture of the renters drivers license.

I would prefer to do two systems and network them, possibly with only a laptop on the counter but he wants me to investigate the multi monitor / keyboard way first. The cost of a special video card may be too much to justify doing it that way.

Biggest problem is that I am just not that current with networked systems to be comfortable. I use XP Pro all of the time and am told that it is the easiest to set up networks with. Need to do some reading though.

Dual head video cards can't be used to get a duplicate display on 2 monitors - it can only "extend" your desktop. You need a VGA splitter rig and high quality shielded extension cables.

I have seen 2 keyboards and 2 mice on a computer, but I can't find the switch you need. I do know they exist somewhere.

Oh! I missed that part

You can so that with VGA (CRT monitors). I don't know what it's called, but there's a cable connected to one of the comps where I work that has VGA male & VGA female ends (It's about 1/2 "- 1" long). Out of the center comes one VGA cable the goes to a monitor.

[edit]: I think the monitors need to be exactly the same, but I'm not quite sure.

[edit2]: Here's a link I found. Not exactly what I was describing, but somewhat close: http://shop.store.yahoo.com/1010net/hdvgayadcab.html
