5.1 Sound

Hi Everyone,

I have just bought two sets of 5.1 speakers one for the computer and one for the DVD player under the TV.

The problem is that i have Intel AC97 onboard sound which is supposed to support 5.1 sound, but i only have the usual sockets, line-in, line-out and microphone. Is there anything i can get so that i can plug it in to just the line-out? The speakers have three jacks front speakers, rear speakers and subwoofer/centre speakers.

The speaker box says that the speakers can be used on computers that do not have 5.1 capability so how would it then be plugged in.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Read your mobo manual to find out how to enable the 5.1 onboard sound. It should also explain what connections to use once it's enabled. If you don't have the manual, you can do a Google search, and download one. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply. I don't have a motherboard book, i made the mistake of buying this one ready built. It is an Advent 3507, i will have to open the box to find out what the mobo is.

Thanks again.

Did you find out what mobo is? Look for the FCC number on the board.

I've already been to that page and it doesn't mention 5.1. I am a bit dissapoinsted to find it is a micro ATX. But how do i connect the 5.1 surround sound speakers. I only have one spare PCI slot, so i cannot add another card. I have already added a USB 2.0 card, so have no slots left.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the help.

I just reviewed all the documentation - that's not a 5.1 sound system, it's standard Soundmax. You will have to get a card if you want true 5.1.

Thanks glc,

The speaker documentation says they can be used with soundcards that do not support 5.1, how would anybody be able to plug it in. Is there such a thing as a jack that the speakers can all be plugged into?

Thanks again.
