Question GeForce 2 or Gefore 4 MX440 SE?

I've started my own little business here whilst I'm at school and a friend of mine wants a new graphics card. They must be 64MB, AGP 4x, and able to make games go quite fast. The shop I buy from only supplies geforce 2's and 4's. The other problem is he doesn't get a lot of money every month. So I want to know from you guys is whether he should get a geforce 2 now, or wait a while until he can get the Geforce 4 MX440 SE. Thanks.

Get the GF4 if he can't wait for a Ti4200.

if hes struggling to decide which one of those he can get, the Ti4200 sounds way out of his league

although either the GF2 or GF4MXs are worth nothing, such a waste of money

I wouldn't say they're worth nothing.
If all you can afford is a GF4, then that's it. Live with it.
It's not all bad, and can be tweaked a bit.

yea ok, they arent worth nothing, but they wont run games well

to make games go quite fast, they become a waste of money, as, if they are playing even a relatively new game, its likely they wont

Playing a game fast requires alot more than just the newest $300 video card. A system with a PIII can play a game as easily as a P4.
It's a combination of CPU speed, onboard RAM, free RAM (not "resources"), and video card.
Get a PIII 600, with 768 meg onboard, 600 meg free, and a GF4, and most games will play reasonably well.
Get a P4, 512 onboard, 400 free, and it will probably be slower.
Increase the RAM, thus increasing the free RAM, and it will speed up, same video card.
Sure, a GF4 won't work as well as a Ti4200, but it's half the cost as well.
A Ti4200 on a clunker system is a waste of video power, as is a GF2 on a P4 system.
A happy medium (for those who are relatively broke) is the GF4 in both cases.

Maybe the ati 8500 or 9000 are something more interesting, over here they cost around 100-140 bucks.
This should get a lot better performance than any mx.
i have a ti4200 128mb 8x on an athlon 2200, my previous one was a duron 800 with gf2mx200 64mb. these mx cards will run something like sof2 with low settings pretty doable,
but i had to put nolf2, battlefield 1942, project igi 2 to absolute lowest settings
to get it even somewhat running.
even than project igi 2 was still pretty much slide show.
I must say im very pleased with having waited to get me a better card this time.
these mx's are more than good enough if you dont do any newer games, but otherwise they are a little on the light side.

Pricing is so totally different in the UK.
I can get a GF4 MX 440 SE for about $70 CDN.
The Ti4200 is still $129 or so.
That's almost half the price.

I think I'd take an ATI 8500LE over either one of those GF's.

OK, you guys obviously don't like the selection available. How about you suggest inexpensive, but effective graphics cards. Take into account the country I come from, where we don't get the latest stuff for a long time, and a reasonably small amount of dollars means a bigger difference here. Thanks.

I only paid $85 for my 128MB Radeon 9100 and it does real good for all the games I play, and I play them at 1024X768 resolution 32bit color, fast, clear, and smooth as can be.

Hallo everyone, I'm in Cape Town and can supply/suggest the following:
Radeon 9000 Pro2 R1,695
Leadtek A170 MX440 R995
Leadtek A180 MX440 R1,350 (8x agp)
Radeon 9000 R1,350
MSI MX440 R1,295 (8x agp)
Have used all of these and the Radeon 9000 Pro2 kicks them all into the dust. Kids gaming PC:
Intel Easton 815eeau
Celeron 1400 Tualatin
512meg SD ram
IBM 7200 40gig
Radeon 9000pro2
Plays any current game extremely well.
MX440 cards struggle with games like NFS Hot Pursuit 2, 9000pro 2, flawless gameplay.
Anything is available locally, just know where to shop.
If you need any assistance/pointers/contacts youre welcome to contact me.
regards
casey.
