8X AGP on new video cards....

Shopping for new video cards I noticed that almost all the nVidia cards are now 8X AGP. Can I assume that they will work fine on a board with only 4X AGP? Mine does.

agp 2x slots do not fit agp 8x anymore (difference in voltage 1.5 vs 3.0)
two weeks ago, i placed a radeon 9500pro 8x in a 4x agp asus mobo
(dont know type anymore).
its a athlon1200, everthing runs smooth as can be.
