fqpissed Trouble with sound after re-install

Well I somehow fixed my wave device so I can get wav sounds but still not midi. My computer tells me that the "device is already running, wait til it is finished and try again". I know this can't be right. When I boot up I get this window before everything loads:
"Window is searching for new hardware:
Wave Device for Voice Modem". I don't even know what kind of codec I should be looking for. Everyone I try in the list raises a flag saying that device was not designed for this system. How do I get around this? What kind of codec can be used on windows 98SE. Please point me in some direction, this is driving me nuts!
thanks to anyone listening

You really need to include some specs.
We can't help if we don't know what piece of equipment you're talking about, what the rest of your rig is like or what OS you're running.

If you are getting that message, your modem is not properly and completely installed. Feed it the driver disk for your modem.

It also sounds like your sound card drivers are not properly installed too.
