Video recommendations
Hey all,
I'm researching parts for a new build for a college student and want opinions for the video card. He is going for Computer Graphics and needs something that would keep up without breaking the bank. Any opinions appreciated.

The ATi 9100 has been suggested a number of times.

I've got a friend running the 9100 and he's taking AutoCad, PRO E and Mechanica. The 9100 seems to get the job done for him and allows him to play games as well.

My 8500 seemed to have trouble keeping up at 1280x1024x32 @ 90hz.
Page refreshes and scrolling up and down were noticably choppy. The 9500 showed the same problem, until unlocked with 9700/9800 Pro drivers. I'd say get what you can afford, more is always better of course . It might be worth it to go on up to a 9500 Pro for the extra memory bandwidth that those cards have over the 9100s.The 9500 Pro is the best "bang for the buck" vid card on the market right now, imo. The 9500 Pro is just about the top end of his budget, but will he really benefit from it for computer graphics courses in college?

The 9500 PRO would be a better card if you can fit it into his budget.
BTW I think my friend uses 1024X768 32bit resolution. What are the rest of the system components if you don't mind? Last edited by lil Jimmie; 04-16-2003 at 10:53 PM. |

Then I’d go with the 9500Pro and as soon as you could drop another 512Mb of ram in it.

Yeah, I knew he would need to up the ram as soon as he could afford it. Looks like it's going to be the Sapphire 9500 Pro for video. Any problems with Sapphire?

These cards are designed for gaming, but the extra speed they have for gaming also translates well into general 3d rendering and high-res desktop applications (like CAD, Photoshop, etc.).
Any card can do 1024x768x16 @ 80 hz, but a person dealing with computer graphics will likely eventually want a very large monitor that can sustain a high refresh rate at 1280x1024x32 and above. In that respect, the gaming cards are the best bet for "consumer level" video cards as well. |

My buddy would love to have a Matrox Parhelia 256MB or better, but with his budget the 9100 will get him by till he finishes his courses.

Yeah, at over $500 that's not a card a person in college can afford, but I bet it's sweet for graphics work.

For graphics work, believe it or not, the $95 Matrox G550 with "only" 32mb ram does a fine job. Forget anything 3D with it though.
