Video Capture.Picture ok but no sound.Help !

I want to capture video and sound from external source(VHS,DVD) to my hard drive and burn onto DVD.
The PC is a Compaq Presario, and I have an ATI All in Wonder 9000 video card,Soundblaster Live Audio card.
I can get picture, but no sound.
I have used several different capture software programs, including Windows Movie Maker,ArcSoft Showbiz, and the ATI program that came on the CD .
I have the RCA audio/video leads coming from the VCR,into this purple adapter box, from which a cable goes into the AV input on the ATI card.

There is a black output cable from the AV out on the ATI card, and it splits into 4 cables. They are :S-video out,RCA Digital audio out,RCA video out,and a3.5mm jack audio out.
The 3.5 mm jack is for the audio to loop through to the line in on the soundcard.
But the sound card does not recognize the sound at all, even though I know there is sound coming from it.(I plugged it into my minidisc recorder, and i heard the sound.)
The soundcard works fine when CD's or DVD's are played on the PC itself, just no sound from external sources.
I called Compaq(my PC maker)they could not help.I tried Creative and ATI, but today being Good Friday, there's no one there
Any ideas? Is the soundcard line input faulty? All i get through the speakers is a hissing noise, like an empty channel

Cool

Edit out. Will post back when I find what I'm looking for.
Chas

Check the line in volume level. Control panel, Open Sounds and audio devices, under Volume click advanced.

Thanks Chas, but I already did that with no luck !
Also I just tried plugging the audio loopthrough into the microphone socket and I got sound.
BUT !!
its very over-distorted and I cant get that distortion level down, even with the volume / record levels really low,it still distorts heavily

Send a message via AIM to Xayd
As you may have figured out, the mic jack is amplified, try the line-in.
