WHAT THE HECK HAS HAPPENED TO MY MONITOR??

I used my PC this morning for a little while and the went to an Easter dinner gig with the extended family. When I just now got home, there is something really funky wrong with my big Trinitron monitor. There are these permanent gray lines across my screen. I rebooted and they are still there. They seem to have "some" sort of relationship to what's on the screen as they look like extensions of actual lines of type or lines from box borders on the screen and what not. These line also seem to be coming off of my desktop icons. In other words, if I grap a desktop icon and move it around the screen, the gray line that appears to come from that icon, moves around with the icon when I move it. No matter what I do, these lines are still there. Also, any color on the screen such as the colors in the icons in the task bar have taken on an almost flourecsent glow.

When I first bought this PC about 4 years ago, it was my first and I had heard about needing a screen saver so as to not burn out your screen. Of course I do have a screen saver but I was actually told that it wasn't even necessary any longer with the new screens. Anyway, I DO have a screen saver.

WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON WITH MY VERY EXPENSIVE, NOW OUT OF WARRANTY, TRINITRON MONITOR????!!!!!!!!

Check your video card, it is possible that you have a over heating issue there, instead of the monitor. If you have a spare video card swap it in, if the lines remain its the monitor.

I don't know enough about all this stuff to be swappin' anything. I guess I'll have to call someone.

If it is the monitor, is it completely shot or is it a repair of some sort?

Well, theres always hope...but sometimes repairs can start to rival the cost of new monitors...

Instead of swapping video cards, you can try another monitor. If it DOES happen with a different monitor, then it is your computer. If it doesn't then it is in fact the monitor.

Not really sure. Don't even know what that means?

The problems that I have seen similiar to this have all been video card or driver related. I haven't seen a monitor be the cause of these kinds of artifacts before. I would guess your monitor is ok.

That's definitely a video card issue - either a corrupted driver or defective video ram.

What kind of video card do you have?

It is most likely either nVidia or ATI, but there are a few other manufacturers.

www.nvidia.com for a new nVidia driver
www.ati.com for a new ATI driver

I had wierd video once, screen all screwed up and booted to safe mode. Automaticly sets to 640X480 res. and when I rebooted all worked fine. Worth a try.
