Well, it kinda depends on what you're talking about when you say "best". The "best" video card for gaming is not necessarily going to be the best one for doing things like CAD or video editing. A couple of nice cards are the ATI Radeon 9700 Pro and the nVidia 4600 (I think there's a 4800 out now but I haven't read any specs on it so I couldn't tell ya if its better or not). Again though, these are good cards for gaming but if they are talking just an overall good card, the choices may be different. For instance, there's an ATI card at Newegg.com that is going for over $800! Is it better? Depends on what you want it to do. It supports resolutions up to like 2048 x 1536 or something (which would be great for art applications and video editing but it may totally suck at games. Maybe someone else will reply to this that knows something I don't though.

I can tell you that the top two *gaming* cards available are the nVidia GeForceFX 5800 Ultra, and the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro.

The Radeon All-In-Wonder 9700 Pro card would be one of the best also, because it would handle games and high end non-gaming video needs.
Try http://www.tomshardware.com/ and http://www.hardocp.com/index.html for sites with good copy on video cards. HTH

AWD > Geez, there's a 5800 now?! I've apparently fallen a little behind on the nVidia cards. On a side note, is the Radeon 9800 supposed to be any better than the 9700 or did they just fix some "issues" and rename it so people would know what version they were getting?

Best 2 cards to use for what?
Gaming, video editing, as your substitute TIVO, office apps or does the machine have to do everything at your place? A gamer would go for the 9800pro, a strict office maching would do well with a matrox, All-IN-Wonders get the PVR ( personal video recorder-the substitute TIVO), NVidia is currently out of the running with gaming cards though the mainsteam FX 5600 ultra is a decent card, just not the best. The FX 5800 ultra, aka dustbuster, was a disappointment. If you already have a firewire connection a Matrox or even a radeon 7000 is fine for video editing. In short, there are no 2 best cards just ones that are better for some uses than others. Ace the report by going through all the categories. |

At this exact time, yes, those are the 2 best gaming cards from different manufacturers.
