ATI Radeon 9200??

I was looking at the video cards one day at a local store and saw the Radeon 9200 128MB DDR card. It says it supports DirectX 9.0 and has 128MB of DDR memory, I searched on newegg and pricewatch but couldn't find it. How come it's not there and is it a good card?

Gigabyte ATI RADEON 9200 128MB VIVO RETAIL
Specifications:
Chipset:Radeon 9200
Memory:128MB DDR
Bus: AGP 8X /4X
Core Clock 250MHz
Memory Clock 400MHz
Memory Bus: 128-Bit
Ports: VGA + DVI + SVideo Out (VIVO Ports and DVI-VGA Adapter)
Retail box (with Software and games see pics) Model#: GV-R9200VIVO Special FedEx Saver Shipping $5.00

$101.00

*Which* FX? There's a whole series of them. It looks like a direct competitor to the FX 5200 to me, which I think is going to effectively replace the GF4 MX.

I think the 9200 is a good card, but nowhere near as good as a 9500.

ah so there is going to be a whole line of just FX cards, spanning from low price FX (MX cards) to high price FX (Ti cards)

MX and Ti cards have already passed haven't they? I've only heard that the new ones are the GeForce FX; they may make GeForce Fx(insert numbers) or so. I like my radeon 9800 all the same though =)

The 9200 is supposed to be the radeon 9000 or something around there, and its difference is it has the core r350 chip (spelling), which is replacing the r300 all the old cards have. There is a radeon 9600 which does the same but will be better than the 9200 and of course, the radeon 9800

9200 (bargain price good performance) Low
9600 (graphical performance and good speed) Medium
9800 (Game Enthusiast) Highest

There's the FX 5200, 5600, and 5800. Funny thing - replace the 5 with a 9 and the Ultra with Pro and you have the ATI line.

Look here :http://mirror.ati.com/products/pc/radeon9200/specs.html

Scroll down to features and look under smart shaders, the card supports DX 8.1 not DX 9.

If you want an NVidia card in a similar price range you're stuck with the FX 5200.
While it is a DX 9 card when benchmarked against the ATI DX 8.1 cards it came in last.

how do the FX cards compare to the Ti naming scheme?

5200 - Budget MX style

5600 - Ti4400

5800 - Ti4600

5800 Ultra - beyond Ti4600

????

When I read the box of the Radeon 9200 it said that it supports DirectX 9.0 and I did go to the site you recommended a while ago. So the GeForce FX isn't as good as good as the Radeon 9200? Oh and the FX card is priced the same as the 9200.

Am I missing something ?
It says "full support for DX 8.1", at ATI's website. There is no mention what-so-ever of DX 9.
You could be looking at an error or I could, but as far as I know, the DX 9 cards are 9500 and over.
The 9200 cards are similar to the NVidia 4800 cards. That is, they're 8.1 cards with an 8X AGP spec but not DX 9.
The other point is that the Geforce 5200 cards finish behind the 9000 cards ( I mean the 8500, 9000, 9001,9002 ) on all the tests.
If you need a new card and you don't want a Radeon then you go for the one of the FX 5600s ( yeah, the Radeons beat it but it's still a decent card ).
I would treat the FX 5200 as the "MX" of it's generation.

I thought I saw a pattern in radeons... that 7000s support direct x7, 8000's support direct x8, and 9000s support direct x9, partial and full support, just my little theory though

You'd think it would follow logically but that's not what's happening.

It somewhat follows, but the 9100 is a DX8 card - that's because it used to be an 8500.

I checked the Radeon 9200 card and it supports DirectX 8.1 and is COMPATIBLE with DirectX 9.0 so it will work for future games. It's not listed on the ATI website though.

Hi MB,
The link in my first post will put you on the spec page for the 9200s on ATI's website.
In theory all cards are compatible with the the DX apps. It's just that the older they are the fewer features they'll be able to use. However, should you still be treasuring that old Voodoo card, as per example, you will have more than your fair share of problems.
