fx 5200 right now, but ATI will come out with something better soon
Although I think the 9800 Pro can compare closely to the fx 5200..not sure though..have to compare the specs first.

Preference is with the ATI. Though in my recent builds, I stuffed them with nVidias.

If you had asked 9500 vs. the FX 5600 or the 9000 vs. the FX 5200, that would be a different story, those are open for argument. The 9500 will eat the 5200's lunch. The 5200 is barely better than the GF4 MX.

The GF4 MX is not much better than a GF 2, and below the GF 3. So that also puts the 5200 between the GF 2 and GF 3...?? Just curious... TwoRails

In all benchmarks the ATI 9000 beats the FX 5200 as does the older 4200.
NVidia claims that the card in an entry level DX 9 bagain for new/occasional gamers. I claim it's a wast of money. |

I don't think he needs personal preferences, he just wants to know which out of the two cards is better.

Fair enough. However, it's apparent that benchmarks have proven the ATI card is the better performer, so it's rather silly to say that the nVidia is the better card, don't you think?

Of course the 9500 is better. The 5200 is a low-end card while the 9500 is a mid-range card.

I think the ati image quality is far ahead of any nvid card I have run, and I have run a few. Have a 9500pro and it is better at everything than my gf4ti4200. Want a 9700 badly for them fat mem pipes now.

I'm also thinking heavy on switching to ATI (like maybe the AIW 9700), so what does everyone think of ATI's driver "issue" ???
Is everyone confident that they've come a long way? Are there still problems? Are they updated regularly? I think drivers are a big part of "which is better" TwoRails |

I have had no driver problems with the 9500 Pro. The thing that make people mad is that ATi announces that they are aware of the problems but never fixes them. Well a check at the ATi site and you find a lot of fixes. also you dont hear many complaints about the new catalyst software.

Driver issues with ATI is overblown like AMD running hot, Intel being extremely expensive, etc. They have clamped down on driver issues and do updates about every 4 to 6 weeks now.

ATI Driver problems? Don't you mean NVidia Driver Problems from the included CD-R that came with the card.
ATI and their pardners have the drivers down to zero problems on the install, just click "Install" and that is it. |

well I know of some games that doesn't fully support 9700..
They always mention about "will be fixed upon future release of drivers" in their readme files.I'm not sure of ATI drivers.. My GF4ti4200 got some issues with Splinter Cell that shadows have glitches...but then it was solved by the release of 43XX drivers. |

GLC is very right, the 5200 can't compare to the 9500 at all. And...the top and FX is no match for the 9800. I was privie to a test here in Dallas, and saw the huge FX tested. It was pretty fast, loud, and big. And when the dust settles, the more efficient radeon 9800 won. I was big time Nvida before too, used them in over 89 builds. But...the tide has turned, and now Nvida has focused on mobos. And thier top tier vid card is a leaf blower. Albeit a fast and loud one.

Thanks for the reinforcement on the driver issue. Sometimes it's hard, when all you seem to hear is negative things on a topic, to make a clear disicion.
~~~ And, yes, every review I've read on the Ultra is it is barely on par with the 9700 and the 9800 kicks it's proverbial behind. ~~~ Still haven't had time to research the 5200... So it's the lastest "MX" level of card?? TwoRail |
let's go back to the original question - comparing those 2 exact models is apples and oranges. Even the most diehard Nvidia fan has to admit that the Radeon 9500 will blow away a 5200, they aren't even close to being the same class of card. It's like asking what's better - a P4 2.4 GHz or an Athlon T-bird 1.2 GHz!
This is not an invitation to start an AMD/Intel debate, by the way. I could have used a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz vs. a Soundblaster 16 comparison. |
Personally, I wasn't engaged in a debate. Since I am thinking of buying an ATI my question,
"is the 5200 just a new name for an MX level card??" is, to me, very relevant to the original post. |
I think the fact that it's under $100 would say that, yes.
Thanks. Peaking around at 9700's and 9800's, I kinda new that the 9500 is about a $150 US card, but had no idea what the 5200 was going for. Heck... I've not even seen a review of it in the mags I get.
