How do I install a sound card?
i know it's very simple, i've just never done it before.
the new card is a soundblaster live 5.1 (OEM from newegg) the old sound is from the onboard sound in my intel 845PEBT2 how do i do it? i think this involves getting into the BIOS to disable the onboard sound, which i don't know how to do. thanks oh, i'm on XP pro if that helps |

ok.. go into the bios by pressing [del] or [f1], then go to the section marked integrated peripherals or the like, and ensure you disable both onboard sound/modem and onboard midi/joystick port. then make sure you turn your pc off, and disconnect it from the mains. open up the side of your case, and unscrew a blaking plate from the back of the case next to a PCI slot (these are the white slots), align the sound cards connector with the PCI slot and push firmly and evenly into the slot, ensuring the ports are sticking out to the back of the pc. it might be a bit hard to push, but it will go eventually. connect the lead going from the CD Rom drive into the mobo into the soundcard. then close up your case, and boot the pc into windows. xp will most likely detect it and install drivers, but it is best to install the latest from the net. go to www.creative.com to download the drivers, after the soundcard has been installed, or you can cancel windows' own installation process and install them from scratch later (they will come with instructions) if windows has already installed yoru card with the stock winxp drivers, go into the devvvice manager and remove it. you can now install the latest drivers. check everything works, if not ask back here or goto creative.com/read the manual/google

All you have to do is put the card into a PCI slot. Then boot the computer and widowsXP will find new hardware. Then you put in the cd to install the drivers. Most motherboards will use the added card automatically without disabling them in the BIOS.

I'm a little confused.
I take it that Foost has been using the sound drivers that are standard with XP so he doesn't have any driver uninstalling to do? Or did he add motherboard sound drivers to his set up anyway? |

it's all good. thanks for the help everyone. i just didn't want to mess anything up. XP pro did recognize the new hardware, but failed to install it correctly. the software on the cd took care of it.
gotta love these promedia 5.1s with the new card!!! |
