it's an impossible answer to give because everybody uses their monitor differently (runs for different hours) i have a veiwsonic on my desk at work that has been here probably 4 years. i had an old dell monitor at home that looked to me like it was 7 years old, and now i have an lcd proview that's lasted about a year and a half.

maybe I'm just lucky, I have never had a monitor go bad,
just pass it on down the line for other family members that get a new system built, and need a monitor till they can get a bigger one, I still have some 15 " laying around the shop for testing |

I just had to replace two monitors...one 15" and one 17". The 15" was a Digiview from about six years ago and the 17" was a Gateway monitor that was only like two years old.

My last one (17" Gateway made by Mag) lasted for over 6 years. I have an 11 year old 14" CTX on the bench that still looks good (for what it is). I've also seen monitors go out in under a year.

CompUSA 19" my wife uses is showing signs of wear after 4 years. It sometimes sucks in from sides creating hourglass figure and then fills screen but changes color.
Hopefully it will survive in some fashion till end of year. Then it is very possible that she would inherit a Samsung 17" flat panel. Chas

The monitors at work are on 24/7 and we get about 3 to 4 years out of them before they get too bad to use(crt dim, sync bad,up in smoke, etc) This includes all sizes, brands, models.

I've seen some monitors last for over 8 years. I've seen others that go after a few months due to various interal problems and user care and interaction.
I'd say you could easily get 4-5 years out of a monitor, granted that it's kept in reasonable environmental conditions and not handled to roughly.

It is a fact that HP pavillions are crap. I had a brand new one a few years ago and it just died. I took it to a used store and there were like a dozen more with the same problems.

Would life be extended by powering down when not in use, or is it better to leave them on? Chas |

I let power management in Windows shut the monitor down after 20 minutes, everything else is on 24/7 unless I go out of town.

I have my monitor turn off after 20 min, and if I know I'm going to be away for several hours, I turn it off.
