Question Sound card & on-board sound???

I know someone who is trying to use on-board sound and a sound card at the same time. He is having problems. Is this possible? I've never heard of someone doing this.
He's using an Asus A7N8X Deluxe motherboard with 6 channel sound and a SB live value sound card.
He's having problems with the some of the outputs from the on-board sound.
I would think that there would be a conflict between the two.

i think there is going to be some conflicts there. the best thing for him to do is disable the onboard sound and use only the sound card.

You should be able to use both, however, IF the card you're adding can operate on an IRQ other than the one the on-board sound takes.

Lots of people have multiple sound cards in their machines (a studio sound card for recording, that doesn't support directx for instance, and then a gaming sound card in another slot that does support directx).

It can be done, you just have to specify which is the default and which application is to use which card.
