Suggestions for a Video Card
Since my MX440 gave up (I have no idea how or why... I've tested it in 3 different systems, no worky), I'm looking for a new mid-range video card. Something in the $150 price range. I favor ATI, but if the nVidia chips are cheaper then I'll go that way. I don't need all out performance or anything, just something that can handle moderate gaming along with detailed graphics work.

Best bang for the buck right now in that price range is the ATI 9500 Pro. It's over your budget by about 25 bucks but it's the best card on the level below the 300 dollar + cards IMO.

The GeForce 4 Ti 4200 would also be a good choice if you can't get the 9500 Pro.

The 9700 PRO is better obviously than the 9500 PRO and it is less than 300 bucks now.
 but yea, the 9500 PRO would fit your budget if you squeezed a bit more change. I think i saw some for around 170 bucks somewhere.

Definitelt the Radeon 9500pro. I am looking to upgrade to it myself. As stated above, it's only $20 or so more than you're looking to spend.

the Asus ti 4200 is around $140 on newegg.com, no need to stretch your budget

An ATI 9500 (non-pro) will fit in your budget and I'd still take that over a Ti4200.

Isn't there a patch also that upgrades your 9500 to a 9500pro or something like that?

It depends on the 9500 in question. Before they had a specific circuit board for the 9500 ATI was caught shipping crippled 9700s as 9500s, so with those if you're lucky enough to get one yes, you can simply use 9700/9800 Pro drivers and get 9700 performance.
Cards with the new 9500 chipset that they later did produce are just 9500s, so can't be converted. |
