Radeon 9500pro or 9600pro

I'm looking at the Radeon 9500pro & the Radeon 9600pro. Both are about the same price. I thought I saw somewhere that the 9500pro still outperforms the 9600pro. Can someone clarify this.

www.tomshardware.com

check out this site and do a search for Radeon 9600, and you'll find a couple of great articles. In fact all of this site's articles rock.

The 9500 is purported to be faster/better than the 9600.

if you want to OC a Radeon 9500PRO it will run very nicely! Mine is OCed at 351/ 317 now and that is faster than a 9700 PRO.

I would get the Sapphire 9500 and soft mod it but other than that i would stick with an ATi Radeon 9500PRO and OC that. It offers great stability and a core temps because it is built with 9700 PRO parts.

I don't know that I'm ready to OC anything at this point. What is involved in the soft mod of the 9500 non pro card, and what does it get you?

The soft mod will enable four "hidden" pipelines on that card to work. Once that is done, the card will act like a 9700. Then you can easily OC the card to 9700 PRO speeds.

The OC of the Radeon 9500 PRO involves flashing the card's BIOS so that it is automatically read as a 9700 PRO. Then you can OC it even higher. Unfortunately, the 9500 PRO OC doesn't get you 256 bandwith whereas the 9500 mod/ OC does. That is why it can be a big decision...

I think the 9500 non-pro mod sounds like the way to go. I'm not an overclocker and don't do much of anything in the BIOS. (So bad that I'm not sure even how to get into the BIOS) Any way to provide some detailed instructions on this for use when I get the card?

Just do a www.google.com search for "9500 9700 mod" and you'll find numerous guides on the procedure.

I would not recommend doing the mod and just grab the 9500Pro. The mod only has a 50% chance of working, and if it doesn't work you'll get artifacting in games (annoying, random, splotches of color). Also, if it doesn't work you've voided your warranty on the card. It is also getting very difficult to find the proper card, as ATI has stopped porducing any modable cards. Bottom line it isn't worth the risk involved, and the 9500Pro will last for years to come.

9500 Pro > 9600 Pro.

If you can get a 9500 non-pro that's moddable that's even better, but the mod of course isn't guaranteed to work. If it does work you get a 9700 Pro for about half price but so goes taking chances with moddable hardware .
