ATI Radeon 8500 or 9000?

Hello all,
I'm looking for a video card for dual monitor support and at least 64mb, agp, for under $100. I see that the 8500 cost more than the 9000. Which card is considered better? These would be for work, so no gaming just a fast dual monitor support card.
Any suggestions?
thanks
Jim

if it's just for work, the 9000 will work fine. this 65 dollar 9000 is a good choice.

Actually that card will not work. It doesn't have a DVI connector. My real question was, out of the Two ATI cards (ATI 8500,ATI 9000), which one is better? The newer model card is not always the better card.

From what I have experienced.. the 8500 is the better card.

Weren’t there benchmarks that showed the 8500 was a better performer than the 9000 and the 8500 was later renamed to the 9100 because of the better performance?

Yes, the 8500 (but not the 8500LE) has been renumbered to 9100 in its later production to reflect its capabilities better. The 9000 Pro may be better than the 8500 though. For non-gaming use any of these will be fine, they are all excellent graphics cards, I'd take any of them if the price and features are right.

If this is for work, no gaming, the Matrox G550 is better than any of those ATI's in my opinion. It's $95 at Newegg. It's dual head, one DVI and one VGA and comes with a DVI-VGA adapter for dual VGA operation. If you need dual DVI, it's gonna cost you $197 for a dual DVI version of the G550 with cables at widgetsinc.com - the cables are about $50 by themselves. I've built with both of these cards and for 2D graphics this is a great card, don't let the fact it only has 32mb ram turn you off, the graphics processor is lightning fast and the display quality is even better than ATI. Matrox just hasn't been able to (or has chosen not to) speak DirectX well and it's a lousy gamer. Great CAD card though.

Thank you all for the opinions. That is what I was looking for. What is the difference between the 8500 and the 8500LE?

Kinda like the difference between the 9000 and the 9000 Pro - its a faster card. "LE" implies "limited edition" in this case. The 8500LE is still a very capable graphics card.

come on now, you can use a Radeon 8500/9100 for gaming (128MB models, which are both still under $100 and have vga & dvi hookups) of coarse though money not being an issue would have to pick 9700/9800 pro, at least I would, but 4x more money doesnt = 4x better performeace, thus the reason I'm using a 9100 for my gaming needs, and it more then does the job for me.

ssahl: I believe the poster said that there would be no gaming.

no I knew that, I was just pointing out that even though it wasnt going to be used for that, that it still had/has the ability to do so. Didnt mean nothing by it, after all glc, I do believe that the 9100 was what you recomminded to me a while back to get, and I'm still very happy with it. jimhannon I think too will be very happy with that same choice.
