multimedia card/dvd
I bought a second hand PII computer which has a DVD ROM drive which won't play DVDs but works fine as a CD ROM.
I have never had a DVD ROM and don't know what is necessary to make it play DVDs. There is a multimedia card which is joined to the video card by a 40 pin cable. I can't find any drivers for the multimedia card which is called Primetime Goldfinger PCI. The video card is an ATI 3D Rage Pro AGP. Any Ideas? |

The card you are talking about is a MPEG decoder card. You will get best performance using it, but I have no idea about where to find drivers, I entered Primetime Goldfinger into Google and got no hits on computer components. You could pull the card and let the "hardware assist" ability of the ATI video card handle it - your CPU is too weak for software-only decoding but you may get acceptable playback if you do no multitasking while watching a movie. You *will* need a software DVD player no matter what you do. If you got the original ATI driver CD, there's one on there, but otherwise you will have to buy one. I believe you can download a trial of WinDVD or PowerDVD to see if it will work before you buy it.
