Good Video Card?
I am upgrading my computer to a P4, 40 gig HD, and 512 MB RAM. What is a good video card around under $200? It will be used for gaming.

Radeon 9700 is a tad over $200 last I checked, but I personally wouldn't buy anything less than that right now. To be honest, I'd wait a few months. You are right on the cusp of new product which means lower prices. So just hang on a month or two and pick up a Radeon 9700.
That's my two cents. |

But there is no game that requires that right now, isn't that pretty far down the road?

You will want to get at least 128 meg of DDR on it whatever card you get. LJ is correct, in a month of so the prices should be notably lower. If you can stick it out with a current card for a month, it may be in your best interest.

Well I was thinking of the GF4 Ti4200, but I'll wait another month to see if prices drop.

I think you should just get the best video card you can afford at the moment - G4 Ti 4200 or Radeon. They should cope with any games on the market.
The video card market has always been moving forward. The trouble with waiting, is that by the time you wait, something else has come out, and you got to re-evaluate the cost/performance ratio again. Taken to extremes, you would never upgrade because you were always waiting for something better and/or cheaper to come out. This applies to systems as well. Most gamers I know, tend to upgrade their video card once a year, anyway. So it's not as though you'll be keeping the video card for the rest of your life, anyway. Think about upgrading video cards every 12-18 months for the best cost/performance ratio and you can't go wrong. You'll always get a card that's fast enough to play the latest games without paying a small fortune for it. That's my view. |

How about a Radeon 9500 Pro while they are still to be found? I think that's the most "bang for the buck" under $200.

i've heard a lot of good things about the radeon 9500 pro also. i have a gfroce ti4200 (only 64mb) and it works really well. either one would be a good choice.
