Which Blank DVD+R(W) Brand is Best?

I have a NEC DVD+RW burner, and am making backups of my DVD movies. Is there a certain brand of blank "+" discs that is superior?

I seem to recall Xayd saying something about Ritek being the best.

For the bulk brands, yes Ritek is the best by far. I've gone through about two spindles of them and have only had one dud disk.

http://www.allmediaoutlet.com and http://www.rima.com are a couple of good online stores for DVD media.

I think I have Verbatim, the two I have backed up so far look great on my computer, but won't play in my standalone RCA DVD Player. I think it is too old though, got it a few years back.

Check on your DVD player at http://www.vcdhelp.com , they have an extensive database on format compatibility in standalone players.

I have used Verbatim, Philips, Imation and HP so far, and they are all good. Have also used Intenso, but the last two went bad.

BTW for any of you looking at DVD burners and DVD media, regardless of whether you go with + or -, if you intend on burning alot of disks you might wanna stock up a bit on cheap media while it's available.

There's a shortage of the 1x-2.4x media out there right now, as most media manufacturers seem to be producing less of the cheapo disks and opting to move their entire product lines to 4x disks (which cost twice as much).

Get it while it's cheap, prices are going up .

Well, the 4x DVD+R from Philips and Verbatim are not more expensive than the 2.4x media from the same manufacturers

And I forgot to mention Platinum, I had good experiences with that brand, too.

Depends on how you get em .

I'm not sure about retail or availability in Europe, but there are about 5 websites that deal specifically in bulk CD/DVD media in the states, and it's price per disk so the 1x or 2.4x disks are always cheaper (especially in quantity discounts).

BTW, to the original post, for playback in your standalones (assuming it's not an issue with it being able to play burned DVDs), what software are you using to burn with?

Nero is NOT good for DVDs!

To be absolutely sure it's a media problem, I would recommend making an ISO with a program such as ImgTool , and then burning the image.

It could very well be something with the recording method that your player doesn't like.
