Could this work theoretically?
OK I have a dead motherboard with an S3 Trio64V2/DX GPU on it that has 2MB of video ram. I have another computer that works, which has an S3 Trio64 GPU onboard w/ 1MB video ram soldered on and sockets for 1MB more. From what I can tell, they both take the same video RAM chips. The only problem, is the dead motherboard's chips are soldered on. If I could somehow de-solder two of the chips on the dead motherboard and stick them in the open sockets on the good motherboard, would it work? I know this is an insane question but I don't know where to find these RAM chips anymore and 1024x768 @ 256 colors sucks!
Is it possible that this could work? If not, anyone have an old S3 Trio64 video card with RAM chips that can be removed that they would sell me for cheap? Thanks, Andrew Last edited by drewK7VT2; 05-21-2003 at 05:51 AM. |

If you have no problem with the possibility of frying the card, I don't really see a problem with it.
On the dead card, use a soldering iron to melt the solder (this could fry the chip; don't hold the iron there for long), then pull the chip out. Once it's out and cool, bend all of the legs around the bottom.

Theoretically, yes, it should work... worth the trouble, I doubt it as video RAM is dirt cheap.

Those socketed ram chips are not proprietary, see if you can get access to someone's junk bin and see if you can find a video card that already has chips in the expansion sockets. S3 wasn't the only one to use them. If these are rectangular sockets with the contacts around the inside edge of the socket, those are called "SOJ", the most common is 256x16 (512K) 60ns EDO DRAM, you need 2 to make a meg. The S3 Virge cards we used to use came with 2mb soldered, and 4 sockets to upgrade to 4mb.

I would buy another PCI video card, but this computer is my server, and the RAID/NIC/SCSI/modem have already taken precidence over all of the PCI slots
![]() i'm gonna try a few local computer stores and see if i can find any pci vid cards with a couple of removable SOJ 512k chips. thanks

Why do you have both RAID and SCSI PCI cards? Do you need both?

well i guess i got lucky, because a local store had a Diamond Stealth64 2MB PCI vid card with two SOJ 512k chips in it that were removable. got it for $5. stuck the chips in the sockets on my mobo and the **** worked.
![]() *edit* because my raid card is only IDE. |
