screen goes blank when watching DVD

When I watch a DVD using Windows Media Player 9 on win xp in full screen mode, the screen will go blank but the movie is still playing. I have to press the escape button to exit full screen mode and go back to desktop. Then I must put it back in full screen mode. It is not the screen saver because this happens too often (sometimes every few minutes). Does anyone know what is going on with this and have a fix for it??
Thanks!

Does this happen with other DVD players, say WinDVD or PowerDVD?

It does not happen with Power DVD. I like Win Media Player, because it puts out better sound for some reason.
