good video capture software

I'm trying to capture video from a vcr that I have hooked into my tv tuner card's a/v jacks. but the software I'm using is terrible. I was wondering if you guys could recommend something good (and free/cheap) to use to record. I'm not as interested in editing, but if you have any editing software you really like, let me know.

i want to capture in vcd or svcd quality.

Depending on the card's chipset Dscaler might work.
