What motherboard are you talking about? I suppose it could work as long as there were the correct connections available for the speaker wires.

If anybody is talking about that nowadays it is most likely a load of FUD. It was supposed to be a problem with VIA chipsets, not AMD itself. And that was also a couple of chipset generations ago.

I have a Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 Digital on a VIA board with an AMD cpu and it works flawless. Don't believe what other people say. You never know until you try.

That's only a 2.1 codec. If you want 5.1 you are going to have to disable it and get a sound card.

Yep, that's how you get into the BIOS. To clear out the old drivers, check first to see if there is an uninstall option for them. If not clear out all the entires in the Device Manager that deal with the onboard sound and then reboot. Windows should detect the sound again and install some generic drivers for it. Then you can go ahead and install the new card and it's drivers (don't worry about uninstalling the Windows drivers, they'll get overwritten by the drivers for the new sound card).

The exact sequence is this - use the uninstall and/or clear it out of device manager, shut down, put the card in, start up, go into bios, disable the onboard sound, start Windows and install the card drivers.
As an aside, I've been following your other posts - and far be it from me to tell you how to spend your money, but if I were you, I'd buy a video card before buying new speakers and a sound card, if your present speakers are crappy you can run the line out from the onboard sound to your stereo or plug a set of good headphones into the speaker jack. |

i was actualy thinking of the exact same thing. i have a surround sound system already as a stereo, im weighing it out. but what would i need to connect my computer to my stereo? any special parts, or would i be able to use a standard A/V wire?

I believe all you need is a patch cable with a 1/8" stereo phone plug on one end and two RCA plugs on the other end to plug into an aux input pair on the stereo. Radio Shack should have what you need.
