PLease diagnose my sound problem.

My friend is getting sound from a CD out the front on earphones, and can hear Windows98 .wav sound out the rear , but no music from CD player or sound from web pages. Have changed the speakers and tried another good set, and have checked all the volume control panel settings and none are turned down or muted. What else could it be ?
The sound is built into the motherboard- not a separate card.
If you think it can only be the card, Q? can I add on a new sound card? or is the mobo going to read the original built in one?

What Motherboard make and model?? What OS?? What does device manager show for sound devices?? Did U check ControlPanel>Sounds and Audio Devices for the correct settings there...???
The web page problem may just be a needed plug in that the browser does not have installed. If your saying that you hear the windows sounds properly out the speakers then is would seem to be software related. What CD player are you referring to there???
You can disable that onboard sound and add a PCI sound card, just make sure U disable the onboard sound first.. I had one heck of a time the first time I added a sound card to an old system and did not disable the onboard sound first....Almost ended up reloading windows that time....

Thanks- going out of town for couple of days-will go over
there on the weekend and report on CD, mobo, make etc.
OS is W98 early edition.Yes, I checked 'Sounds/audio devices'
also Device Mgr. seems OK.
Windows .wav sound from the rear is only heard into 'walkman' earphones- not into speakers.

Ok, so if your saying that U plug these walkman headphones into the same port, ususlly the green one, on the sound card, and U get sound but then put speakers into the same port and nothing then your looking at speaker problem... R they the kind that use wall power to amplify?? That is usually the kind U need on most sound cards.. I do remember my old ISA soundblaster 16 did have a jumper setting for amplifies or non amplified speakers...
Did these speakers ever work???

KT, Thanks for your encouragement and help. Disabling the onboard sound and substituting a pci card did not help and having other problems I decided to format the HDD and reinstall everything and used some new audio setup files from the manufacturers site. Its fine now- thanks again.
