insane graphics cards
real quick, i just wanted to ask you guys...what the heck are those incredible looking, $800+, ATI Fire GL cards? i'm on newegg a lot and i always see these things when i'm checking out your usual ATI Radeon cards...they look like beasts. what are they? are they specifically for high-end graphics/multimedia work or are they sorta prototype things or would they even work with games and normal graphics applications? i've seen some with 256MB RAM on them; that's 4 times the RAM in our server...what the heck is all that graphics power for? heh, anyways, just wanted to get an answer to this mystery that's been plaguing me for a while now...thanks in advance...

I THINK they are card that game designers use for creating 3D models and 3D video.
lets say you wanna make a game like..........Unreal Tournament 2003. it takes more graphics power and more RAM on the card to make the game then play it. but i think most game design companies go for Matrox cards...no? |

They are for graphic workstations, not for gaming...
the drivers they use have different optimizations that make them no good for gaming, but great for creating other graphic applications. |
