Dual Monitors With Old Graphics Card

After having many failures trying to get an ati radeon 7500 to work i finally gave up and put a geforce 2 mx back in this box. I wanted the 7500 so i could run dual monitors. So i decided to try throwing a very old pci video card i had laying around in here and see what happens. Well the card doesn't seem to work. Windows xp recognizes the card and installs the drivers for it but reports "This device cannot start. (Code 10)". The card worked in the box it was pulled from. I'm not realy sure whats going on i just want to have another monitor to throw my im's or someting on when i'm watching a movie or similar. The card is a cirrus logic 5434 pci video card (i think). I have tried removing and reseating the card and reinstalling drivers. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Jeff

When you try to run 2 video cards, some combinations will work well, and others just refuse to work. Dual head AGP cards *always* work better than 2 separate cards, when you use 2 cards Windows wants to make the PCI card your primary display.

About all you can do with what you have there is try the PCI card in different slots, there may be a resource sharing issue with the slot you have it in now. Failing that, try to find a different chipset PCI card.

The last dual card setup I got working was with an original TNT AGP card and a Matrox Millenium PCI. Tried a S3 Virge PCI and it wouldn't work. I have a friend that has 3 cards all working - I believe the AGP is an ATI Rage 128, and the PCI's are a Rage Pro and a Riva 128.

If you are looking for an inexpensive dual head card and you can't get an ATI working, there are some GF4 MX 440's out there with dual head.

thanks for the input i tried switching pci slots with no success. and i've give up on the ati it was a cheap card probably why it doesn't work (though it does work in another box). I'll see if i can find another pci video card to try. I'd like to get a card with dual heads i just can't afford it right now cause i'm too busy with school to have a job. And i've found that cheapo cards with dual heads i.e. a ati readeon 7500 don't necessarily work very well.

Thanks,
Jeff

One thing to check as well is in your BIOS, make sure that the PCI is first to boot. I had no problems when the PCI would boot first, but if AGP was first it didn't work. Go figure!
