Question Bout My Ram Maybe Not Working...help!!!!!!!!!

ok i am building my first computer and i am definately a noob to this. first of all when i go to boot i get a beep code and 5 seconds later my pc shutsdown. the beepcode supposedly means ram or maybe the video card but stuff should go on the monitor i guess but nothing does... i have 2 DIMMs of ram and i have tried each one at a time but same error... one thing that i have notices is that their is a small RAM led near the ram on the MoBo but they are always orange whether the ram is in when i boot or not... also same error whether ram is in or not...and one more point/ question just in case, as long as the heatsink is just resting on the cpu for now, there is no way that the pc nows that its not clipped on, do they?

PS- if anyone wants to see a picture of the pc so they can help, i can probably post one. Thanks in Advance

System Specs:
AMD 3000+
120 GB Seagate HD
1 GB Ultra OC RAM (2x512mb)
52X CD-RW
4X DVD+RW (not using it now)
Giga-Byte MotherBoard GA-7n400
GeForceFX 5600
500 Watt Power Supply

Cool

You could be getting heat build up. Heatsink should be installed with the thermal pad that came with if or with thermal paste if there wasn't a pad before powering up. Heatsink just resting on CPU is not sufficient.

These processors heat up very fast.

The heatsink must be properly installed and the CPU fan must be plugged into the appropriate header. The CPU is overheating and the motherboard COP is shutting it down to prevent damage. If you didn't have the COP you would literally burn up the CPU.

Note - do NOT remove or insert ANY component (such as ram or a card) with the power supply plugged into the wall, the motherboard has power applied even though you haven't hit the power button. You can damage the components or the motherboard itself if you don't heed this caution.

You are playing with fire powering an Athlon up without the heatsink properly and fully installed. If you do this and it still shuts down, read the thread that james has linked to.
