audio problems with new build

I recently built my first comp, and most things seem to be working correctly except for my sound. My system Specs are as follows:

Intel P4 2.6
ASUS P4P800 Deluxe
ATI 9800 pro AIW
80 gig 7200 8mb cache maxtor
samsung 3.5
optorite cdrw
viewsonic CRT monitor
350W antec psu

I use the audio onboard w/ my mobo since I heard that was pretty good, but this is the problems I have. I plugged in my speakers correctly, but when I start up windows I hear a loud crackling noise in them and not the startup sound... same thing shappens with shutdown. I can't get any sounds to play thru them. I tried installing every driver I could find and nothing seems to work. I'm using XP home. Anyone have any ideas whats wrong?

Have you gotten any sound out of it yet since you've built it? If not, make sure onboard audio is enabled in your BIOS.

What kind of speakers are you using and where you get them from? Reason I ask this is, I built my dad a new computer and tried to use his speakers from his old gateway and they wouldn't work. I tried them on both his new computer and my computer. I thought it was just weird, but he has to get new speakers now.

Make sure its enabled in your bios. Also, do see the little speaker down by your clock? If you see it make sure the volume is up and nothing is muted.
